AEO: Showing Up in AI Overviews and LLM Answers

A growing share of searches now end on the search results page itself, with an AI-generated summary answering the question directly, or in a chat interface like ChatGPT or Perplexity that never shows a results page at all. Being the source behind that answer is becoming its own kind of visibility, separate from where a page ranks in a traditional list of links. That is what Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is about.

What Answer Engine Optimization Means

Traditional SEO is largely about ranking position: getting a page to appear as high as possible in a list of results for a given query. AEO is about something slightly different, getting a page's content selected, parsed, and used as the basis for a generated answer, whether that answer appears inside a search results page, a chat response, or a voice assistant's reply.

A page can rank well and still never get pulled into a generated answer, and a page can be cited in an answer without the visitor ever clicking through. Both forms of visibility matter, but they reward slightly different things.

SEO Is Still the Foundation

AEO does not replace SEO, it sits on top of it. AI systems generating answers still draw heavily from content that is crawlable, indexed, and already established as relevant for a topic. A page that is blocked from crawling, loads slowly, or has no internal links pointing to it is unlikely to be surfaced by either a traditional search result or an AI-generated one. The technical and authority fundamentals, site structure, page speed, indexability, and a reasonable backlink profile, remain the entry ticket.

What Changes for Content

Once the fundamentals are in place, a few things make content more likely to be picked up and cited by an AI system:

  • Direct answers near the top. Sections that open with a clear, plain-language answer to the question implied by the heading, followed by supporting detail, are easier for an AI system to extract and reuse.
  • Self-contained statements. Sentences and paragraphs that make sense on their own, without needing the surrounding context, are more likely to be lifted as a standalone answer or quote.
  • Clear structure. Headings phrased as questions, short paragraphs, and lists make it easier for both readers and AI systems to identify the relevant section quickly.
  • Schema markup. FAQPage, HowTo, and Article schema give AI systems and search engines an explicit, machine-readable map of a page's structure and intent, on top of the visible text.

The RAG Connection

This overlaps directly with how retrieval-augmented generation works, which is covered in more detail in a separate post on RAG pipelines for marketing chatbots. In a RAG system, an AI model retrieves the most relevant chunk of text from a knowledge base and uses it to ground its answer. Public AI Overviews and chat assistants work in a similar way at a larger scale, retrieving relevant chunks of web content to ground their responses.

The practical implication is that the same discipline, breaking information into clear, self-contained chunks with direct answers and explicit structure, helps in both situations. Whether the system retrieving your content is a chatbot trained on your own documents or a public AI Overview pulling from the open web, well-structured content is what gets retrieved and reused.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For an existing site, AEO work usually starts with an audit rather than a rewrite:

  • Review existing pages for "answerability." For each important page, check whether a single paragraph could stand alone as a complete answer to the query that brought someone there.
  • Restructure key pages. Service pages, FAQs, and high-traffic blog posts are reorganized so each section opens with a direct answer before going into detail.
  • Add or expand schema markup. FAQPage and Article schema are added where missing, giving search engines and AI systems an explicit structure to work from.
  • Track appearances over time. Where tools allow it, AI Overview and answer appearances are tracked alongside traditional rankings, since the two do not always move together.

Getting Started

The pages already getting search traffic are usually the right place to start. An audit of those pages for structure, directness, and schema markup tends to surface quick wins before any new content needs to be written.
